Some transit spaces can also become true meeting points between cultures, inspiration and design languages. During Milan Design Week, one of these spaces also becomes a point of contact with natural stone.
Inside the Steelbloom area in the departures zone of Milan Bergamo Airport (Gate A), a new project takes shape, signed with Galvani Trading natural stone: a desk in Jatoba Brown quartzite, designed to be used every day and seen by an international audience that, during the event, includes architects, designers, contractors and industry professionals.
A design piece created to welcome people, but above all to tell a story.

The material chosen for this project is Jatoba Brown quartzite, a natural stone extracted in Brazil from quarries owned by the group. This is a concrete advantage for designers, because it means direct control over the origin of the material and the possibility to select blocks with precise aesthetic characteristics, ensuring visual consistency and constant quality, both for large and small quantities.
Jatoba Brown is a quartzite with a strong identity, recognised for its warm, deep brown tones that recall natural wood, crossed by veining that makes every slab unique. It is precisely this combination of material strength and aesthetic refinement that makes it an increasingly sought-after choice in contemporary projects.

The desk, called Bancone Sfera, is defined by a flowing S-shaped form, designed to follow the movement of people and interact naturally with the space. It extends for about 7 metres in length, with a depth of around 0.64 metres and a height of about 1 metre, becoming a central element that is visible without ever feeling intrusive. It was made with a thickness of 2 cm, a choice that combines visual lightness with structural solidity.
Beyond its visual appeal, the structure is also highly functional: it integrates storage doors and large drawers, fully clad in stone, maintaining visual continuity with the exterior and showing how quartzite can also be used for operational elements without sacrificing elegance.
Thanks to its natural characteristics, quartzite offers high resistance to wear, impact and temperature changes, making it ideal for a high-traffic public setting such as an airport.
The chosen surface finish is entirely satin. This creates a matte, even surface without sharp reflections, enhancing the material without making it glossy. From a tactile point of view, satin-finished quartzite has a soft, velvety feel, very different from both polished surfaces and more heavily textured finishes.
In the case of a veined quartzite such as Jatoba Brown, the satin finish plays a precise role: it does not flatten the natural pattern, but enhances it, making the veins deeper and more legible without creating artificial contrast. The result is a surface that invites touch, where the hand perceives the stone in an authentic way, without roughness, with a continuity that conveys quality and precision.
Yet functionality is never separated from aesthetics. The surface of Jatoba Brown delivers a warm, welcoming and natural visual effect, able to interact with contemporary materials while standing out for its authenticity. Today, this balance represents one of the most sought-after languages in the design world.

Bringing a natural stone element into an airport during Milan Design Week means placing it within an international, dynamic setting that is attentive to the evolution of design. This year, however, the dialogue is even more direct, as the very theme of Salone del Mobile recalls the concept of material, bringing it back to the centre of the project. The images, installations and furnishings presented across the halls in Rho speak clearly: surfaces, textures and natural elements become a language. In this context, stone is the real material from which everything begins. It is fully capable of interpreting the present while engaging with the future.
With its balance between material depth and contemporary appeal, Jatoba Brown quartzite becomes a point of contact between the natural world and the world of design: not an interpretation of matter, but matter itself, authentic and tangible.
This desk is not a temporary installation. It will remain inside the airport until 2028, becoming an integral part of the space and accompanying millions of travellers over time.
It was installed with a precise purpose: to be used every day, while maintaining its aesthetic and functional quality over time.
This approach reflects a clear vision: natural stone is a concrete, durable solution that fits perfectly into everyday design projects. And today, more than ever, at a time when design has returned to speaking the language of materiality, it represents a coherent and contemporary answer.

This installation is the result of a collaboration between different companies that share the same attention to detail and quality:
A team effort that shows how natural stone, in order to express its full potential, needs different skills working together across the entire supply chain.
If you are in Milan for Design Week, or passing through Bergamo Airport, stop and take a closer look at this project. Touch the surface, follow the veining, observe how light interacts with the material.
Because natural stone is not described only in words. It is seen, touched and experienced.
